ICICI Bank, in collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), has announced the development of a specialised cancer care block at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC) in Visakhapatnam. This initiative, driven by the ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, focuses on paediatric and haematolymphoid (blood-related) cancers and is poised to become one of the most advanced cancer care facilities in eastern India.
High-Impact Infrastructure for Focused Cancer Care
The newly launched ICICI Foundation Block for Child and Blood Cancer will span 3.9 lakh square feet and house 215 beds, offering dedicated care to around 3,000 patients annually. The eight-storey structure is designed to augment the region’s capacity to deliver high-quality, specialised cancer treatment and is expected to be operational by 2027, pending statutory clearances.

This development is part of ICICI Bank’s expanded ₹1,800 crore commitment toward enhancing cancer care facilities across TMC locations, which also includes projects in Navi Mumbai and New Chandigarh. Collectively, the three new units will cover over 10.7 lakh square feet, add 555 beds, and support 19 LINACs (Linear Accelerators) for radiation oncology.

State-of-the-Art Medical Capabilities
The ICICI Foundation Block will be equipped with:

- Advanced therapeutic units, including chemotherapy, CAR-T cell therapy, and bone marrow transplant (BMT) suites.
- Diagnostic infrastructure like MRI, PET-CT, and three LINAC machines for precision radiation treatment.
- Specialised care units, including 14 BMT rooms, 14 ICUs, and five modular operating theatres.
- Training and research zones to support medical education, collaborative treatment planning, and innovation in paediatric oncology.
Leadership Voices on the ICICI Foundation Block for Child and Blood Cancer
Speaking at the inauguration, Pradeep Kumar Sinha, Chairman, ICICI Bank, stated, “Eastern India requires strengthened oncology infrastructure. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to ensuring equitable access to specialised medical care across geographies.” He also unveiled the N.K. Rao Auditorium, another ICICI-supported addition to the HBCHRC campus.

Sandeep Batra, Executive Director at ICICI Bank, highlighted the scale of the initiative: “Our healthcare investments now stand at ₹1,800 crore, and the upcoming blocks will serve as regional cancer care hubs with cutting-edge technology and facilities.”
Dr. Umesh Mahantshetty, Director of HBCHRC, emphasised the transformative impact of the new block: “This support will significantly boost our capabilities in managing and researching paediatric and haematolymphoid cancers.”
Adding clinical insights, Dr. Girish Chinnaswamy, Head of Paediatric Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, noted that HBCHRC has registered 200+ paediatric cancer cases and 350–400 blood cancer cases annually over the past three years, which will now be more efficiently handled with the expanded infrastructure.
Implications for the Indian Healthcare Ecosystem
This initiative signals a critical opportunity for medical device manufacturers, diagnostic solution providers, healthcare IT companies, and pharma players. The facility’s scale and focus on advanced modalities like CAR-T therapy and BMT position it as a strategic node for
- Clinical research collaborations
- Public-private partnerships in cancer care innovation
- Training and upskilling opportunities for regional medical professionals
- High-volume procurement and deployment of sophisticated oncology equipment
Looking Forward
The ICICI Foundation Block at HBCHRC marks a bold step in regionalising cancer care excellence and elevating healthcare accessibility in underserved regions. As India continues to decentralise specialised care, such institutional collaborations pave the way for an inclusive and future-ready health infrastructure.
