Azim Premji Foundation

Azim Premji Foundation has announced a ₹4,000 crore commitment over the next five years to develop and operate a 1,000-bed charitable super-speciality and multi-organ transplant hospital in Bengaluru. The initiative marks one of the largest philanthropic investments in advanced healthcare infrastructure in the country.

The proposed hospital will be developed on a 10-acre parcel within the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases campus, which the Karnataka government has agreed to lease to the Foundation for a period of 99 years. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction and long-term management of the facility was signed between the Medical Education Department of Karnataka and the Azim Premji Foundation.

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah described the project as a landmark public–philanthropic collaboration, expressing gratitude to the Foundation and to Azim Premji for committing to run the hospital as a not-for-profit institution.

While ₹1,000 crore will be invested in building the facility, additional funds will be deployed over the years to support operations and ensure sustained free and low-cost care delivery.

Strengthening Public Healthcare Systems

Anurag Behar, CEO of the Azim Premji Foundation, underlined that the initiative is rooted in the Foundation’s long-standing philosophy of reinforcing public systems rather than substituting them. He emphasised that while hospitals are essential, long-term health outcomes depend on preventive care, strong primary health centres, and community-based interventions led by frontline workers such as ASHAs.

Highlighting Karnataka as one of the most proactive States the Foundation partners with, Behar pointed to measurable improvements in grassroots health and education indicators across districts such as Surpur and Sindagi over the past 25 years of engagement.

Emerging as a Multi-Organ Transplant Hub

Medical Education Minister, Shri Sharan Prakash R. Patil noted that the new hospital is envisioned as a comprehensive transplant hub, offering kidney, liver, and other organ transplants. Nearly 70% of the procedures will be provided free of cost, with the remaining services offered at highly subsidised rates, mirroring the operational models of premier autonomous institutions such as Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology.

The announcement comes at a time when Karnataka faces a significant transplant burden, with over 5,000 patients awaiting kidney transplants and more than 1,000 in need of liver transplants.

Aligned with Karnataka’s Universal Healthcare Vision

The project aligns closely with Karnataka’s broader roadmap to strengthen tertiary healthcare capacity across districts. The State has set an ambitious target of establishing one medical college, one super-speciality hospital, one trauma centre, and one cancer hospital in every district. Currently, Karnataka operates 22 government medical colleges, 10 super-speciality hospitals, eight trauma centres, and eight cancer centres, and is midway through achieving this goal.

Looking ahead, the State government has articulated its intent to move towards a universal health coverage model over the next decade, inspired by global public healthcare systems such as the UK’s NHS.

Implications for the Healthcare Industry

For India’s healthcare ecosystem, the initiative signals a growing role for structured philanthropy in scaling high-end clinical infrastructure, organ transplantation capacity, and equitable access to care. It also sets a precedent for collaborative models involving government, philanthropic capital, and public institutions, an approach likely to influence future investments in healthcare delivery, medical education, and advanced clinical services across India.
