SSO Cancer Hospital

Speciality Surgical Oncology Hospital (SSO), a rapidly expanding chain of surgical cancer speciality centres across Western India, has secured $2.8 million in growth capital from the Everhope Oncology platform—an investment initiative backed by Narayana Health, W Health Ventures and 2070 Health. The funding infusion is set to propel SSO’s next phase of expansion as demand for accessible, high-quality cancer surgery intensifies across India.

India currently records nearly 2 million new cancer cases annually, with experts warning that the burden is likely to double by 2045. As tertiary hospitals grapple with overcrowding, limited specialist availability, and extended wait times, the need for scalable, surgeon-led oncology delivery models has become critical.

Founded in 2021 by Dr Sanket Mehta, a Tata Memorial-trained oncologist, and a cohort of seven cancer surgeons, SSO was conceived to bridge these systemic gaps. The organisation has since grown into a network of five centres with 20 specialised surgeons, collectively performing over 20,000 complex oncology surgeries.

Building a Specialist-Driven Oncology Ecosystem

SSO differentiates itself through organ-specific surgical teams operating within facilities dedicated exclusively to cancer procedures—an approach that drives efficiency, consistency, and predictable clinical outcomes.

“Our mission has always been clear: a patient’s access to quality cancer care should not be determined by geography or income,” said Dr Sanket Mehta. “This investment enables us to deepen our clinical strength, enhance infrastructure, and launch three new centres in Mumbai, ensuring patients receive world-class surgical care when and where they need it.”

A Model Backed by Healthcare Innovators

Investor partners emphasised the importance of clinical leadership in building sustainable healthcare delivery models.

According to Dr Pankaj Jethwani, Managing Partner, W Health Ventures: “When clinicians lead the redesign of care pathways, they create systems that close real gaps in patient management. SSO’s surgeon-led approach is a strong example of doctor-entrepreneurs shaping the future of oncology care—a model we are committed to scaling.”

Echoing the sentiment, Viren Shetty, Executive Vice-Chairman, Narayana Health, stated: “Designing for India’s middle-income population has always led to scalable, durable healthcare models. SSO has applied this philosophy to cancer surgery through disciplined, organ-specific care teams. Everhope is proud to support their vision as they expand across more cities.”

Next Phase: Regional Scale-Up Across Western India

SSO plans to expand its footprint in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and additional Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities across Maharashtra and Gujarat, with a focus on strengthening surgical expertise, upgrading clinical infrastructure, and implementing advanced care protocols.

As the cancer burden rises, SSO’s model—rooted in specialist-driven care, system efficiency, and affordability—is positioned to play a transformative role in widening access to high-quality cancer surgery across India.
