The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved the establishment of two private universities dedicated to health sciences, marking a move to expand specialised medical education and healthcare training capacity in the state. The approved institutions are Lata Mangeshkar University in Nagpur and Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University in Ahilyanagar.

Lata Mangeshkar University, proposed by the VSPM Academy of Higher Education in Nagpur, will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality programmes across medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and nursing. The institution is supported by a 1,138-bed hospital, providing clinical infrastructure for education and training.

The second institution, Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University in Ahilyanagar, will be established by the Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation. It will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality courses in medicine and will have access to an 830-bed hospital equipped with healthcare facilities.

Admissions to both universities will be conducted through the Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. The fee structure is yet to be finalised. The universities will not be entitled to financial assistance from the state government, and students will not be eligible to claim government scholarships under the current provisions.

The proposals were submitted following amendments to the Maharashtra Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2023, during the monsoon session of the state legislature. The applications were subsequently examined by a committee in accordance with the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC), following which the cabinet granted approval.

The private university status will become effective after the required amendment to the schedule of the Maharashtra Private Universities Act. The state government has also directed the institutions to clearly communicate their fee structures and comply with the CET Cell’s admission timelines.

The development is expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s health sciences education ecosystem by creating additional opportunities for medical and allied healthcare education. With access to large hospital facilities, the two universities could also contribute to clinical training and the development of a skilled healthcare workforce across the state.
