In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Government of Maharashtra has appointed Dr. Eknath Pawar, the Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Grant Government Medical College and JJ Hospital, Mumbai, as the new Dean of BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital in Pune. This decision follows just 22 days after Dr. Chandrakant Mhaske assumed the additional charge of the same position.

The official order, issued on June 20, stipulates that Dr. Pawar will continue to fulfill his duties at the Mumbai-based institutions while taking on the added responsibilities in Pune. Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, Director of State Medical Education and Research, confirmed the issuance of the order but refrained from commenting on the specific reasons behind this abrupt change.

The reassignment follows the recent appointment of Dr. Chandrakant Mhaske, who had taken over as the acting dean on May 30. Dr. Mhaske, also an alumnus of BJ Medical College, is currently the Dean of Ahilya Devi Holkar Government Medical College, Baramati. His appointment came after Dr. Vinayak Kale, the former Dean of BJ Medical College, was placed on compulsory leave due to the controversial Pune Porsche car crash case.

The action against Dr. Kale was taken swiftly after he publicly stated that he had no involvement in appointing Dr. Ajay Taware as the Medical Superintendent, asserting that he was merely following the directives of the state medical education minister. Dr. Taware, alongside another doctor and a class IV staff member, has been implicated in the alleged tampering of the blood sample of a minor involved in the Porsche incident.

As Dr. Pawar steps into his new role, the medical community and the public await the positive changes he promises to bring to BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital.
