Officials on stage at the AIIA-iCAINE 6th Foundation Day in New Delhi on 29 October 2026

India’s push to bring artificial intelligence into traditional medicine took a concrete step on 29 October 2026, when the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, launched a national open AI challenge built on an open-source Ayurveda large language model, alongside two strategic MoUs and a new intellectual property facility for Ayurveda innovators.

The announcements came as AIIA-iCAINE, the institute’s incubation centre under the Ministry of Ayush, marked its sixth Foundation Day, according to a release from the Press Information Bureau.

An open AI challenge built on AyurParam

The centrepiece is AyushTech Innovate: National Open Ayurveda AI Challenge, organised by Techfest, IIT Bombay, with the Ministry of Ayush and AIIA. Participants will build on AyurParam, IIT Bombay’s open-source large language model for Ayurveda.

The challenge asks teams to develop AI solutions that are trustworthy, transparent, safe and practical. Problem areas include:

  • Support for Ayurvedic clinical practice and treatment planning
  • Retrieval of information from classical Ayurvedic texts
  • Research workflows
  • Public health awareness

The national grand finale is scheduled at IIT Bombay from 15 to 18 December 2026.

A secretariat for AI in Ayurveda

AIIA-iCAINE signed an MoU with the World Ayurveda Foundation (WAF) to set up “AI in Ay”, a Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence in Ayurveda. The platform is meant to advance AI-driven research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the field through joint research, funding and CSR proposals, capacity-building programmes, hackathons and startup incubation, drawing on WAF’s national and international networks to promote responsible AI use.

A second MoU, with Reliance Retail Limited (Pahadi Local), covers formulation advisory to turn classical Ayurvedic knowledge into skincare products, with Reliance Retail handling development, testing, manufacturing and marketing.

IPR support for innovators

The institute also launched an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Facility for Ayurveda, aimed at helping innovators and entrepreneurs understand and protect their work as they move towards product development and commercialisation.

Prof. Vd. P. K. Prajapati, Director, AIIA, said the incubator has supported 52 problem statements and mentored more than 100 startup ideas over six years, with nine startups receiving seed support of ₹3 lakh each.

Other activities on the day included grants for Smart India Hackathon 2025 winners, the launch of the Techfest Hackathon, the release of Ayupreneur: A Beginner’s Glossary, and workshops on branding, pricing strategy and design thinking for Ayurveda ventures.

Why it matters

Most healthcare AI in India so far has focused on radiology, documentation and diagnostics in modern medicine. An open challenge anchored on a domain-specific Ayurveda LLM, paired with a dedicated AI secretariat, gives AYUSH startups and researchers a shared base model and a structured route to test clinical, research and public-health use cases. The emphasis on transparency and safety will matter as such tools move closer to patients and practitioners.

AIIA-iCAINE, set up on 29 October 2021 under the Ministry of Ayush, is recognised as India’s first public-sector Ayurveda business incubator.
