Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has added a second indication to its specialty biologic ILUMYA in the United States. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the company’s supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for ILUMYA (tildrakizumab-asmn) in adults with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA), Sun Pharma announced on 30 October 2026, a day after the regulatory action date it had flagged when the filing was accepted in March.

ILUMYA, an interleukin-23 (IL-23) inhibitor, was first cleared by the FDA in 2018 for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. The new label takes the antibody from the skin into joint disease, and it keeps the product’s defining feature: it is given only by a healthcare provider, not self-injected at home.
What the approval rests on
- Evidence: two global Phase 3 studies, INSPIRE-1 and INSPIRE-2, both 52-week, randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled, testing tildrakizumab 100 mg in adults with active PsA.
- Read-out: efficacy and safety were assessed after just two doses at week 24. Top-line results were first reported in July 2025.
- Safety: the company said findings were consistent with ILUMYA’s established profile, with no new safety signals. The most common adverse reactions in PsA (3% or more) were upper respiratory tract infections and COVID-19. As with other drugs in the class, patients must be screened for tuberculosis before starting treatment.
Positioning: the in-clinic option
Sun Pharma is pitching the provider-administered format as a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. “As an IL-23 inhibitor administered exclusively by a healthcare provider, ILUMYA is now an option for adults with active psoriatic arthritis who are unable to self-administer treatment or who may benefit from regular in-office care,” said Rick Ascroft, North America CEO of Sun Pharma, calling the approval “another important innovative medicine milestone” for the company.

Rheumatologist Philip Mease of Swedish Medical Center and Providence St Joseph Health, and Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said clinicians need “a range of therapeutic options that allow us to individualize care,” adding that a provider-administered IL-23 option offers some patients more support and engagement with their care team.
The market is sizeable. Sun Pharma cites roughly 2.4 million Americans living with psoriatic arthritis, a chronic immune-mediated disease that causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness and can lead to permanent joint damage. About one in three people with psoriasis also develop PsA, and more than 15% of psoriasis patients may have it undiagnosed, which gives a dermatology-first brand a natural route into rheumatology.
Why it matters for Indian pharma
For India’s largest drugmaker, the label expansion strengthens the specialty and innovative-medicines business it has been building alongside generics. ILUMYA has steadily added US indications, with scalp and nail psoriasis supplements approved in April 2024 and December 2025, and the brand already holds marketing authorisations in more than 55 markets, including India, Japan, China, Australia and Canada. In Europe it is sold as ILUMETRI by partner Almirall.
A wider label for an established biologic is one of the more efficient ways to grow a specialty franchise: the molecule, manufacturing and safety record are already in place, and each new indication extends the addressable patient pool without a new development programme from scratch. The approval also lands on the same day Sun Pharma is scheduled to discuss its second-quarter FY27 results with investors, keeping its innovative portfolio at the centre of the story.
For the wider industry, it is another signal that Indian companies are competing in complex immunology biologics in the world’s most demanding market, not just in volume generics, a shift that will be on the agenda as manufacturers, regulators and innovators gather at India Pharma Expo and the NextGen Pharma Summit.
