India Surpasses 100 Crore Health Records Linked to ABHA

ABDM milestone underscores rapid adoption of interoperable health records and accelerates India’s digital public infrastructure agenda.

India has crossed a major milestone in its digital health transformation journey, with more than 100 crore health records now linked to Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

The achievement marks a significant acceleration in the adoption of interoperable digital health infrastructure, with the number of linked records doubling from 50 crore to 100 crore in just 15 months.

According to data released by the National Health Authority (NHA), the milestone reinforces India’s position as one of the world’s largest digital health ecosystems, enabling citizens to securely access and share their health information across participating healthcare providers and digital platforms.

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for over 15 crore linked health records, reflecting strong adoption across both public and private healthcare networks.

Accelerating the Digital Health Ecosystem

Launched in 2021, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aims to create a seamless, standards-based digital health infrastructure through unique health identifiers, interoperable electronic health records, healthcare provider registries, and consent-driven data exchange mechanisms.

The rapid growth in ABHA-linked records highlights increasing participation from hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, pharmacies, digital health applications, and state health departments.

Current growth trends indicate that approximately 10 crore health records are being linked every two to three months, demonstrating the expanding scale and maturity of the ecosystem.

For healthcare providers, digital record integration offers the potential to improve care continuity, reduce administrative burden, minimise duplication of diagnostic tests, and support data-driven clinical decision-making.

Driving Interoperability at Scale

Industry experts view the milestone as a validation of India’s digital public infrastructure approach, which combines open standards, interoperability, and a federated architecture to enable innovation across the healthcare value chain.

Unlike centralised health record systems, ABDM allows patients to maintain control over their health data through consent-based sharing mechanisms, enabling secure information exchange between providers while preserving privacy and data ownership.

The growing network of ABHA-linked records is expected to create new opportunities for healthcare organisations, health technology companies, insurers, and digital solution providers to develop interoperable services built on common standards.

The ecosystem is also expected to facilitate the adoption of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and population health management tools, by improving access to structured and longitudinal health data.

Implications for Providers and Policymakers

As the volume of digital health records continues to expand, stakeholders across the healthcare sector will need to focus on strengthening data quality, cybersecurity frameworks, consent management systems, and digital literacy among both providers and patients.

For policymakers, the milestone signals progress towards the broader vision of a digitally enabled healthcare ecosystem aligned with the goals of Viksit Bharat, where technology supports equitable access, improved health outcomes, and more efficient healthcare delivery.

With record volumes continuing to rise and ecosystem participation expanding nationwide, India’s digital health infrastructure is increasingly being viewed as a global reference model for large-scale, interoperable healthcare transformation.
