homeopathy

Shape up or close down — that is the stern warning issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfares Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) to all principals and directors of homoeopathy colleges asking them to ensure that their educational institutions meet with the provisions of Homoeopathy Central Council (Minimum Standards Requirement of Homoeopathic Colleges and attached Hospitals) regulations, 2013, before the beginning of this academic session.

This latest order by AYUSH has left many students who are aspiring for admission to homoeopathy colleges worried about their future.

AYUSHs order now is a follow up of the two previous letters from the Department issued in 2011and 2012. Wherein, as per the letters, the Central Government had granted amnesty of non-enforcement of the provisions of Homoeopathy Regulation 1983, especially only for academic years 2011-12 and 2012-13, to all the existing Homoeopathy Medical Colleges (except for certain colleges where specific action for withdrawal has been initiated), noted a senior official at the Department of AYUSH.

As per the latest order, the Department has told the colleges that they should ensure 100 per cent compliance of the minimum standard requirements and accordingly remove all shortcomings.

Colleges have also been informed that amnesty is not extended for further academic years and hence colleges have been told not to undertake any admissions in the homoeopathy courses for the coming academic session or subsequent years until permission for undertaking admissions into homoeopathy courses in the existing Homoeopathy Medical Colleges are granted, noted a senior official in the Department.

As per the minimum requirement the Department has noted that Homoeopathy Medical Colleges should have the prescribed infrastructure, teaching and training facilities and that student should have exposure in the clinical field, besides fulfilling other provisions that have been announced by the Department.

Speaking about this latest order, a senior Homoeopathic doctor said: While the colleges should maintain certain standards to ensure that the quality of students that they produce is good, the Government should not bring out a sweeping rule shutting down admissions. Today we need doctors to take care of the growing population of patients and this branch of medicine has to been given its due recognition.
