Mission Indradhanush 5.0

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s flagship immunisation campaign, Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 5.0, is set to complete its three-round initiative by 14th October 2023. This marks a milestone as, for the first time, the programme spans every district in India and broadens its reach to children up to 5 years old, whereas previous campaigns only covered those up to 2 years old.

The primary objective of IMI 5.0 is to bolster the immunisation coverage of all vaccines listed under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) according to the National Immunisation Schedule (NIS). The campaign especially prioritises enhancing Measles and Rubella vaccination rates, with a goal to eradicate both diseases by 2023. This year also introduces the pilot utilisation of the U-WIN digital platform for routine immunisation across all districts.

The three rounds of IMI 5.0 span from 7-12 August, 11-16 September, and 9-14 October 2023. Every round consists of 6 days, inclusive of a Routine Immunisation Day. While most States and Union Territories will conclude by 14th October, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Punjab experienced delays and will finish their third round in November 2023.

As of 30 September 2023, the first two rounds witnessed over 34.7 lakh children and around 6.55 lakh pregnant women receiving vaccinations nationwide.

To ensure effective execution, a Preparedness Assessment for IMI 5.0 took place between 19-23 July 2023, focusing on 154 high-priority districts across 27 States/UTs. The findings and recommendations were subsequently communicated to all States and UTs. Additionally, a National Workshop was held on 23rd June 2023 in the capital to guide and update all involved parties.

Comprehensive operational guidelines, alongside a robust communication strategy, were provided to every State and UT. This communication plan incorporated a 360-degree approach, advocating for the cause, tackling vaccine hesitancy, and engaging community leaders. Diverse IEC materials were distributed for local language adaptation, ensuring widespread and clear communication.

IMI 5.0 benefitted immensely from the involvement of local representatives, ‘Jan pratinidhis’, and many social media influencers who promoted the cause. They encouraged the public to ensure their children and expectant mothers receive outstanding vaccine doses.

Since its inception in 2014, the Mission Indradhanush campaign has completed 11 phases. The 12th phase is currently in progress. Cumulatively, it has vaccinated over 5.06 crore children and about 1.25 crore pregnant women across India.
