In line with the rising need for organ donation in the state, Columbia Asia Hospitals Pvt Ltd in close collaboration with Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) has recently organised a forum to inspire public towards organ donation. The forum was addressed by ‘Naadoja’ Dr Justice S R Nayak, Chairperson of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission and Dr D. Ramesh, Secretary, ZCCK. Also present was the renowned cricketer Anil Kumble who is a part of Bangalore Kidney Foundation for nearly 10 years now.

Organ donation is a topic much talked about and this forum was another opportunity to clear myths and urge people to come forward to pledge their organs and contribute to the human cause. It is known that a brain dead person can donate up to 14 organs at a time.

Talking at the forum, Dr Nandakumar Jairam, Chairman and Group Medical Director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, said, “Through this forum our endeavor is to improve awareness among the public to bring in more donors. The healthcare fraternity and the general public have to come forward to contribute to the rising need of organ donation, which will help in minimising the disparity between availability and need of organs.”

Anil Kumble who felicitated the organ donors present at the occasion and urged people to come forward for voluntarily donation of their organs, giving others a second chance to live. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “The primary reason for below-par organ donors in the city is lack of education and awareness among people. As a donor, you could save or improve the quality of life of others who suffer from organ failure, bone defects, burns or blindness. It gives me immense satisfaction that even after I am gone, a part of me will continue to live its second innings.”

“We have seen a rise in organ donation over the past few years that are mainly towards eye donation. People are not aware of multi-organ donation in case of brain death. We appreciate Columbia Asia’s initiative of conducting such forum as it helps in propagating the message of organ donation.” added Dr Ramesh, Secretary, ZCCK

Keeping in mind the complications in organ donation process, Government of Karnataka has initiated several measures to simplify the process to encourage people to donate organs
