Punjab has recently conducted Genome sequencing on 401 samples that showed 81% samples were from the B117 virus. This variant had started spreading in the UK since November and now comprises 98% of the new cases in the UK and 90% in Spain. The UK authorities have said that the mutant strain is up to 70% more infectious than the virus that originated in China’s Wuhan.

The novel coronavirus count has been rising in the state over the last few weeks. It is showing a similar trend in seven other states in the country. The resurgence of the virus as identified as the emergent second wave of Covid in the country was set off by mutant forms of the virus, according to observations by experts.
