Food Street Project

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, discussed the “Food Street Project” with senior officials from the Health Ministry and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which aims to create 100 wholesome and sanitary food streets around the nation. In order to decrease food borne illnesses and improve overall health outcomes, this project wants to promote safe and healthy eating practices among local residents and businesses.

As a pilot initiative, the National Health Mission (NHM) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will sponsor 100 such food alleys at various sites around the nation with financial support of Rs. 1 crore each. With the requirement that branding of these food streets be done in accordance with FSSAI guidelines, the grant will be routed under NHM in the ratio of 60:40 or 90:10.

The money would go towards things like providing clean drinking water, restrooms, tiled floors in communal areas, appropriate liquid and solid waste disposal, dustbins, billboards, façade preparation, permanent signage, shared storage space, lighting, specialised carts for particular types of trades, branding, etc.

Aside from the technical assistance provided by FSSAI, the initiative will be carried out by NHM in coordination with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). As part of the technical assistance, training in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) protocol will be provided, as well as help with food street design and SOP creation.

The Indian culinary culture has always included street food, which has also significantly supported and shaped the country’s food industry. Millions of Indians depend on it for cheap and delectable food, but it also significantly boosts the economy of the nation. Street food hubs have made it easier to get food as a result of increased urbanisation, however there are still concerns about the food safety and sanitation at these hubs.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has made a number of improvements to the regulations for food street hubs’ sanitation and food safety standards. These programmes include certification under the Eat Right India movement’s Clean Street Food Hub project, independent third-party audits, and training for food workers.
