The Government Unani Medical College & Hospital (GUMC) in Ganderbal, Kashmir, hosted the opening of the Ayush Utsav yesterday under the auspices of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. The Union Ayush Minister hosted a seminar titled “Bridging the Gaps in Healthcare: Ayush, a Promising Recourse” as part of the government’s initiative to make it possible for ancient medical methods to enhance contemporary patient care.

Students’ posters, displays of medicinal herbs, and a film documentary by the Directorate of Ayush were all present throughout the discussion. A short documentary highlighting the benefits and developments of the Ayush medical system in Jammu and Kashmir was also shown.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sonowal said, “The importance of our rich traditional medicinal practices must be optimally used for the benefit and enrichment of human lives. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there has been a concerted effort to promote Ayush medicinal practices and supplement them with modern medicinal treatments for the holistic recovery and wellness of the people. Taking the vision of Modi Ji forward, it is a matter of great pride that the Global Centre of Traditional Medicine is coming up in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This is brilliant news for further bolstering of the traditional medicinal practices in India as well as globally.”

The Union Minister had earlier launched a three-day First Aid/BLS training programme in Sonmarg, a popular tourist attraction in the area, for the benefit of the less fortunate to allow emergency medical services. The Minister was informed by CMO Ganderbal of the importance of First Aid/BLS Training and the keen interest of the Director of Health Services, Kashmir in outreach skills-based training programmes for the interest of the general public in general. The Master Trainer BLS of DHSK afterward gave the minister a briefing on the BLS modules that are now being discussed with the stakeholders using a simulation-based approach. The training is the first of its kind and is being conducted for the first time in Sonmarg as it is thrown open as a weather tourist destination.

The Union Minister also went to the Hammer Trout Fish Farm to look at the facilities, which included the race ways, circular pond, stocking pond, ova house, indoor raised hatchery, trout feed mill, and recreational fish pond. The Minister paid close attention to the briefing on rainbow trout fishing activities, including training, research, supply chain management, and how government assistance has helped the young entrepreneurs. The farm’s rearing capacity is 0.25 lakh, while its hatching capacity is 4 lakh, according to information provided to the ministry.

During his visit to the National Fish Seed Farm Manasbal, Shri Sonowal was informedf by the Chief Project Officer on the significance of the facility as well as the many initiatives undertaken to advance fish culture in both the capture and culture sectors. A significant amount of fish seed was stocked in natural water bodies under the aqua-ranching programme and also supplied to various private and government carp fish farms, the Minister was informed, highlighting the successes of fish seed production. During the years 2022–2023, an estimated 40.00 Lacs of carp fish fry were produced.

The Minister was informed on the development of centrally sponsored programmes, such as low-cost housing, auto rickshaws, fishing crafts, and gears, and other welfare programmes run for the benefit of the fishing community, as well as the production, rearing, and sale of fish and fish seed. The Minister was also given information on the cutting-edge Manasbal Trout Feed Mill, which satisfies the need for trout feed in both the public and private sectors across the UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Dr. Mohan Singh, Director of Ayush in J&K, previously went into detail on the department’s successes in popularising Ayush practices throughout the union territory. For the purpose of promoting health and preventing disease through yoga asanas, AYUSH Health & Wellness Centers have been developed, and yoga instructors have been hired at each of these centres, Dr. Singh continued.

It should be mentioned that the J&K Housing Board spent 32.50 crores building the GUMC in Ganderbal. Relevantly, the Central Government authorised the Government Unani Medical College (GUMC) and Hospital Ganderbal Kashmir to begin the First Batch of Bachelor in Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) courses with a 60-seat intake capacity in the academic year 2020–21.
