The 500-bed Medica Superspecialty Hospital, one of the largest in eastern India, has recently opened in Kolkata. The hospital was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

The Rs 100-crore facility, as demanded by the authorities, is Kolkata’s first green hospital, having applied for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification developed by the US Green Building Council.

The hospital has declared a collective commitment to bring the best of healthcare delivery to every doorstep, irrespective of the income bracket. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, Shri Surjya Kanta Mishra, the Hon’ble Minister of Land and Land Reforms, Government of West Bengal, Shri Abdur Rezzak Molla, and the Hon’ble Minister-in-charge of Sports and Youth & Sundarban Affairs, Government of West Bengal, Shri Kanti Ganguly.

The Health Minister welcomed the multi-faceted superspecialty hospital, expressing hope that it would go a long way towards helping the state government bridge the demand-supply hiatus. “The government is primarily responsible for healthcare delivery to the people of this state, and a vast majority of them are unable to access quality medical treatment for lack of resources. We are trying our best to reach healthcare to the masses, but our efforts will never be enough, and we need the support of institutions like the Medica hospital,” says Shri Mishra in his speech, laying stress on public-private partnership.

The Chief Minister, Shri Bhattacharjee felt that the new Medica Superspecialty Hospital would make a qualitative and quantitative difference. “I was taken around the facility and I am very impressed with all the facilities they have installed or have planned for the future. With 36 patients able to receive dialysis simultaneously at the Kidney Diseases department of this hospital, it must be the largest dialysis facility in the country, perhaps. Also, there are 10 state-of-the-art operation theatres, which can also function simultaneously, enabling the doctors to carry out a huge number of surgeries within a short span, and provide relief to suffering patients,” he said, adding the hospital was a feather in Kolkata’s cap.

The Medical Director is Dr. Alexander Kuruvilla, the Chairman and Managing Director is Dr. Alok Roy, while Mr. Udayan Lahiry is the President & CEO of the hospital.
