Even as a lack of clarity in regulations is preventing Indian medical device manufacturers from making their presence felt in the USD 2 billion domestic medical equipment market, foreign players, mostly from the United States, are increasingly finding the country a preferred destination.
CII calls for separate regulation of medical devices
The Government has recently introduced the Drugs and Cosmetics (Amendment) Bill, 2007 in order to facilitate setting up of a Central Drugs Authority and introduce centralized licensing for manufacture of drugs.
Government of India to introduce medical devices regulation bill
The Department of Science & Technology has proposed to bring in a new legislation to enforce uniform and effective standards of Medical Devices throughout the country so as to ensure that substandard devices are not exported, especially to developing countries, which do not have medical devices regulation in place and also for use within the country.
