Jharkhand’s Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare is preparing to launch an AI-powered portal that will track the sale and distribution of medicines from manufacturers and wholesalers to retailers and patients. Built by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Jharkhand with the state drug control directorate, the portal was reviewed in Ranchi on 3 November 2026.

The review meeting was chaired by Ajoy Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Health. Officials said the system is meant to help the state crack down on prescription medicines that are diverted and misused as intoxicants, by spotting suspicious transactions as they happen rather than after a raid. It adds to a wider push to digitise drug oversight in India, including the Centre’s National Drug Registry that gives every medicine a unique digital identity.

How the Jharkhand AI medicine tracking portal will work

According to state officials, the portal will record which medicine was sold, in what quantity, by which manufacturer or distributor, and to which pharmacy. That gives drug control officers a near real-time view of how stock moves through the supply chain.

  • AI-based pattern monitoring: the platform will analyse buying and selling patterns across the chain.
  • Automatic alerts: if a medicine is bought or sold in unusually large quantities, the system will flag the transaction so drug control authorities can investigate and act.
  • Focus on vulnerable drugs: officials said it is designed to strengthen oversight of medicines prone to diversion and misuse, and to improve regulatory compliance.
  • Misleading claims: it will also help authorities monitor false claims about medicines, such as promises to cure serious diseases.

“If a particular medicine is bought or sold in unusually large quantities, the system will automatically generate alerts, enabling drug control authorities to investigate the transaction and initiate action if required,” Singh said, as reported by The Times of India.

A complaint channel for citizens

A key feature of the portal is a public complaint mechanism. Citizens will be able to report suspected illegal drug sales, misuse of medicines and other violations of drug rules directly on the platform, and the department will investigate the complaints it receives.

The state’s drug control department has described it as the first portal in the country built specifically to monitor the misuse of medicines, according to Hindi daily Prabhat Khabar, which reported that development is complete and the launch is expected soon. No launch date has been announced.

Why it matters for digital drug regulation

Jharkhand already runs e-Aushadhi, a web-based system that manages drug stock and distribution across government health facilities, from district warehouses to primary health centres. The new portal goes further by covering private manufacturers, wholesalers and retail chemists, where diversion of habit-forming medicines usually happens.

The move fits a pattern of states using software to tighten health regulation, from Haryana making HPR IDs mandatory for doctors, nurses and pharmacists to Tamil Nadu’s Nalam AI system for booking medicine pickup slots. At the national level, regulators have also moved to tighten online promotion of high-risk prescription drugs.

How well the portal works will depend on how many pharmacies and distributors report transactions on it, and how quickly enforcement teams act on its alerts. More on the state’s existing medicine supply system is available on the JMHIDPCL e-Aushadhi page.

Key takeaways

  • Jharkhand will launch an AI-powered portal, built by NIC Jharkhand and the state drug control directorate, to track medicines from manufacturer to end user.
  • The system will flag unusually large purchases or sales so officials can investigate possible diversion of medicines as intoxicants.
  • Citizens will be able to report illegal drug sales and misleading medicine claims directly on the portal.
