one medicine one identity

In a significant step towards strengthening India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem, the Central Government has launched the National Drug Registry (NDR), an initiative designed to assign a unique digital identity to every medicine manufactured and sold in the country. The registry aims to improve the traceability, authenticity, and transparency of medicines across the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The National Drug Registry will function as a centralised digital database, maintaining detailed information on approved medicines, including their composition, manufacturer, regulatory approvals, and other essential details. By providing each medicine with a distinct digital identity, the government seeks to create a reliable system that enables regulators, healthcare providers, manufacturers, and consumers to verify drug-related information with greater accuracy.

The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s efforts to combat counterfeit and substandard medicines by making it easier to trace products throughout their lifecycle. A unified digital registry will also improve monitoring of medicines, simplify regulatory compliance, and enhance coordination among various stakeholders involved in drug manufacturing, distribution, and healthcare delivery.

According to officials, the registry forms part of the government’s broader vision to modernise healthcare through digital technologies. It will support better data management, facilitate informed decision-making, and improve oversight of pharmaceutical products in the market. The platform is also expected to promote greater accountability within the sector by ensuring that medicine-related information remains accurate, standardised, and easily accessible.

Industry experts believe the National Drug Registry could significantly improve public confidence in the pharmaceutical system by enabling quicker verification of medicines and reducing the risk of counterfeit products entering the market. It is also expected to streamline regulatory processes and contribute to a more efficient healthcare ecosystem.

The launch of the National Drug Registry marks another milestone in India’s digital health journey, reinforcing the government’s commitment to building a transparent, technology-driven, and patient-centric pharmaceutical framework while supporting safer access to quality medicines across the country.
