Mother and newborn healthcare

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has unveiled the National Strategy for Safe Motherhood and Newborn Care, reinforcing India’s commitment to improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes through a comprehensive and integrated approach. The strategy aims to strengthen healthcare systems, expand access to quality maternal services, and reduce preventable deaths among mothers and newborns across the country.

The framework focuses on ensuring high-quality care throughout the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. It prioritises early identification of high-risk pregnancies, timely referrals, skilled birth attendance, and enhanced newborn care. The strategy also places strong emphasis on respectful maternity care, recognising the importance of providing safe, dignified, and patient-centric healthcare services to every woman.

A key component of the initiative is strengthening coordination across all levels of the public health system. The strategy encourages capacity building of healthcare professionals, adoption of evidence-based clinical practices, improved monitoring mechanisms, and greater use of digital tools for tracking maternal and newborn health indicators. These measures are expected to improve service delivery and ensure timely interventions, particularly in high-burden districts.

The National Strategy also aligns with India’s broader public health goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including reducing the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR). By strengthening antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care while promoting institutional deliveries and comprehensive newborn services, the government aims to achieve better health outcomes for mothers and infants nationwide.

The launch marks another significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to build a resilient and equitable healthcare system. With stronger policy direction, improved service delivery, and enhanced community engagement, the strategy is expected to accelerate progress toward safer pregnancies, healthier newborns, and a more inclusive maternal healthcare ecosystem.
