Tripura has brought every government hospital in the state onto its Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS), and the Health Department is now pushing doctors, nurses and patients to actually use it. Health Secretary Kiran Gitte announced the full onboarding after a review meeting at GBP Hospital in Agartala on 31 October 2026, saying the goal is a hospital system that runs entirely without paper.

“We have already onboarded 100 per cent of hospitals in Tripura under IHMIS,” Gitte told reporters, as quoted by Tripura Chronicle. The next step, he said, is getting healthcare professionals to work on the platform every day and linking as many patient health records to it as possible.
What Tripura’s IHMIS covers
The system is built to follow a patient through a full hospital visit on one digital platform. According to the Health Secretary, it handles:

- OPD registration and token generation
- Inpatient (IPD) admission and discharge
- Prescriptions and pharmacy services
- Laboratory investigations, with test reports sent to patients’ mobile phones
Doctors can pull up a patient’s medical history, including earlier prescriptions and examination notes, on tablets, and issue prescriptions or test orders digitally instead of writing on paper files.
Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital in Agartala is the model the state is pointing to. Gitte said it has run as a paperless hospital since it opened, with every step from registration to lab reports handled electronically.
ABHA numbers to carry records across hospitals
The bigger payoff, officials say, is for referred patients. Records on IHMIS are to be linked through the patient’s Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number, so a patient sent from a district hospital to a tertiary centre does not need to carry a folder of old reports.
Gitte gave the example of a patient referred from Gomati district to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) or GBP Hospital. By sharing an ABHA number, the patient would let doctors at the receiving hospital see earlier investigations, medicines, X-rays and CT scans. He urged residents to create ABHA numbers and use them for tokens, admissions, discharges and tests whenever they visit a government hospital.
He compared the shift to the way digital transactions changed banking, railways and aviation, saying the state expects similar gains in speed, efficiency and transparency in healthcare.
Why it matters for digital health in the Northeast
Full onboarding is the easier half of a hospital digitisation drive; daily use by clinicians and records tied to health IDs are what make the system useful. Tripura’s review meeting was focused squarely on that second half, which is where many state rollouts stall.
The move puts Tripura alongside larger states pushing paperless public hospitals. On 1 November, Madhya Pradesh began taking its government hospitals paperless under a ₹300-crore HIMS project, and Haryana made Healthcare Professional Registry IDs mandatory for doctors, nurses and pharmacists. Records linked to ABHA are central to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which depends on states feeding real clinical data into patients’ health accounts.
The state has not published figures on how many patient records are currently linked to ABHA through IHMIS, or a deadline for fully paperless operations.
Frequently asked questions
What is IHMIS in Tripura?
IHMIS, the Integrated Health Management Information System, is Tripura’s unified digital platform for government hospitals, covering registration, tokens, admissions, prescriptions, pharmacy and lab reports.
How many Tripura hospitals are on IHMIS?
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said on 31 October 2026 that 100 per cent of hospitals in the state have been onboarded.
Why should patients create an ABHA number?
Linking IHMIS records to an ABHA number lets doctors at any government hospital in Tripura see a patient’s earlier tests, prescriptions and scans, especially after a referral.
