Akums, in partnership with Rotary International Club and Interplast Germany, has commenced the 14th edition of its annual free Plastic Surgery Camp at Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram Hospital, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to providing advanced reconstructive care for underserved communities.
The camp, which began on November 10 and will continue through November 21, has drawn large numbers of patients from multiple districts seeking specialised surgical interventions. A 12-member team of experienced German surgeons is leading the procedures, offering ten days of continuous services focused on complex deformities, burn injuries, trauma-related damage, tumours, and severe wounds. All treatments are provided entirely free of cost, with tattoo removal specifically excluded to maintain clinical focus.
A Lifeline for Patients in Need
Over the years, the collaborative initiative between Akums, Rotary International, and Interplast Germany has emerged as a critical healthcare intervention for individuals who lack access to specialised surgical services. Many patients return annually to continue long-term reconstructive procedures, highlighting the trust and credibility the camp has built within the community.
One such beneficiary is Iftikhar from Bijnor, who suffered extensive burn injuries in an electrical accident and has undergone multiple corrective surgeries through the camp. Grateful for the support, he shared that the programme has restored not only his physical mobility but also his confidence and hope for the future.
Leadership Speaks on Impact and Commitment
Archana Jain, Secretary of Akums Health & Educational Society, emphasised the transformative role the initiative continues to play. “This camp has consistently served patients who have nowhere else to turn. Each year, 150–200 individuals with severe complications receive free treatment. Our collaboration with Rotary International and Interplast Germany ensures that world-class surgical expertise reaches those at the grassroots,” she said.
She also highlighted the essential contributions of Rotary Club members, including its women’s wing, who assist with patient coordination and help bridge the communication gap between Hindi-speaking patients and German medical professionals.
Seamless Multilateral Coordination
Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram Hospital has once again provided crucial support by hosting the camp and offering its infrastructure and medical staff for pre- and post-operative care. Akums’ own clinical team is also involved in dressings, wound care, and recovery management, ensuring a holistic approach to patient rehabilitation.
The continued participation of Interplast Germany strengthens the camp’s capability to manage complex reconstructive cases. Their sustained involvement over the years reflects a cross-border humanitarian partnership centred on dignity, compassion, and professional excellence.
A Continuing Model of Collaborative Healthcare
With enhanced coordination and a rising number of beneficiaries, the Plastic Surgery Camp stands as a model of how public-spirited organisations, international medical volunteers, and local healthcare institutions can jointly deliver high-impact care. The initiative reinforces the importance of accessible reconstructive surgery in improving health outcomes and restoring quality of life for vulnerable populations.
As the camp progresses through its 14th year, it continues to serve as a beacon of hope—demonstrating how collaborative, compassionate healthcare can lead to meaningful social impact.
