Dengue

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has reported that the total number of dengue cases in Delhi has crossed the 4,000 mark this year, reaching 4,061 as of November 2, 2024. In the latest weekly report, the MCD recorded 467 new dengue infections, indicating a slight dip compared to the previous two weeks, which saw 480 and 495 cases, respectively.

This year, dengue has claimed three lives in Delhi, all of which occurred in September. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported since. According to MCD officials, cooler outdoor temperatures are causing mosquitoes to seek warmer indoor spaces, potentially sustaining the risk of dengue transmission. Despite the expectation of an overall case decline as temperatures drop, the warmth inside homes, around 25°C, remains conducive to mosquito breeding. The MCD is urging residents to eliminate indoor breeding sources, such as stagnant water in plant pots or decorative water containers, to prevent further spread of the disease.

October proved to be a critical month, with 2,431 dengue cases, representing nearly 60% of this year’s total — the highest October count in the past five years. Additionally, Delhi has reported 709 malaria cases in 2024, with 279 occurring in October. Chikungunya cases are also at a five-year high, with 151 reported this year, 96 of which were in October.

The MCD report highlights the urgent need for public awareness and vigilance in eliminating mosquito breeding sites to control the spread of vector-borne diseases in the coming weeks.
