Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR)

Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya today inaugurated the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) in Kohima, Nagaland in the presence of Shri Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister, Nagaland; Shri T R Zeliang, Deputy Chief Minister, Nagaland and Shri P Paiwang Konyak, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland.

Dr Mandaviya underlined the dual role of NIMSR, emphasizing its significance in medical education and research tailored to the unique health challenges of the Naga community. He lauded the Union Government’s achievements in ramping up medical education in Nagaland, noting the significant surge in MBBS and PG seats over the past nine years.


Dr Mandaviya also championed the broader perspective of medical education, advising students to venture beyond national borders and tap into international opportunities. In line with this vision, the inclusion of foreign language courses in various medical institutions has been initiated by the Union Government.

Nagaland’s Chief Minister, Shri Rio, deemed the day historic, as the state received its first medical college. He expressed gratitude to the Union Government for bringing this long-awaited dream to fruition. The significance of NIMSR in bolstering Nagaland’s health infrastructure was also underscored.

Shri Konyak appreciated the pivotal role of international agencies, including the World Bank and JICA, in the NIMSR project.


NIMSR promises a comprehensive medical education experience, coupled with an emphasis on outreach programmes and extensive research facilities. With affiliations to Nagaland University, the institute will begin its academic journey, offering 100 MBBS seats, in 2023. The inaugural batch comprises 85 students from Nagaland and six from pan-India seats.

This institute’s establishment aligns with the government’s mission to elevate medical education and health infrastructure not just in Nagaland, but across the Northeast region.

Present at this landmark event were Cabinet members from the Nagaland Government, top Union and state officials, representatives from civil societies, and other special guests.
