Union Health Minister chairs

Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Madaviya stated, “We have seen the unwavering commitment of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to end TB in India. We are ready to lead from the front and be the voice of the Global South in the collaborative fight against TB”, during his address to the 36th Board Meeting of the Stop TB Partnership. He was joined by Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.

Dr Mandaviya told the audience that “India has identified three important health priorities during its G20 presidency.” All of these are focused on universal health coverage and are relevant to our TB elimination response.” He went on to say that there is a lot of “exceptional work being done at the ground level through innovation in case finding, mathematical modeling, digital interventions, and surveillance.” “India would be delighted to share technical assistance with other countries in order for such good practices to be replicated,” he said.

He further emphasised that efforts are being made not only to recover from Covid but also to implement innovative strategies such as the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, which has become a one-of-a-kind global movement. He described it as a call to action to mobilise communities to end tuberculosis.

Union Health Minister urged the Stop TB Partnership Board to deliberate on and take up this matter at the UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage in September this year, highlighting the critical importance of the TB vaccine in the global fight against the disease. “TB vaccine is urgently needed,” he emphasised. It is also critical to accelerate its development, expand manufacturing capacity, and assist countries in gaining easy access to it, according to Dr Mandaviya.
