Union Health Minister addresses a consultative workshop on developing a national framework for emergency medical teams

Dr Mansukh Mandaviya conference

Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya stated, “Being a vast country with diverse terrains and geographies, India can have its own model for disaster/emergency response which can be emulated by other countries”, during his address at the consultative workshop on National Emergency Medical Team (NEMT) India today.

Additionally, he emphasised that “The India model can go beyond the required SOPs and be more flexible and nimble to adapt to exigencies on the ground.” The two-day workshop’s goal is to bring all NEMT initiative stakeholders together to discuss the initiative’s policy, strategy, roles, and responsibilities. It also aims to prepare a road map for integrating the nation’s disaster preparedness needs and aligning their needs for health care with those of standard disaster response.

One of the top issues on the G20 Health Track agenda is the prevention, preparation, and response to health catastrophes. The G20 Health Working Group met in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, for its inaugural meeting shortly after that (18-20 Jan 2023).

Union Health Secretary Shri Rajesh Bhushan, underlined the value of working in conjunction with many existing building pieces, such as the NDMA, NDRF, state agencies, emergency care providers, trauma centres, etc. He emphasised the critical necessity for coordinating efforts across them because these now function mostly in a fragmented manner to ensure agility, rapidity, and effectiveness of reaction.

In reaction to disasters and public health emergencies, the National Emergency Medical Team (NEMT) initiative seeks to modernise the current responsive style of healthcare workforce deployment.

Four key issues concerning emergency medical teams will be discussed throughout the two-day workshop: System, Staff, Supplies, and Structure.
