National Health Authority organised

With an aim to generate ideas that would enable the rapid adoption of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) throughout the nation, the National Health Authority (NHA) held a workshop on October 28 in Bengaluru with stakeholders, including State Mission Directors, IRDAI, WHO, leaders in the health industry, health-tech companies, development organisations, partner NGOs, etc. In the presence of Shri Nandan Nilekani, Co-Founder of Infosys and Former Chairman of UIDAI, Dr. R. S. Sharma, CEO of NHA, provided a brief introduction to the event.

The team participated in the event by touring the C V Raman General Hospital in Bengaluru to learn about the ABDM-enabled procedures the hospital has implemented and their practical effects. The hospital recently launched a QR Code-based OPD registration service, which has significantly cut down on waiting times.

The participants in the session talked about how effective ABDM adoption can lead to Universal Health Coverage and the most recent ABDM innovations that will enable genuine interoperability in the health sector (UHC).

The State Mission Directors from the states of Karnataka, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh—which are among the early adopters of ABDM—shared their experiences and lessons learned from the construction and connection of ABHA at public hospitals and as part of state health programmes.

Speaking further about government initiatives, Shri Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman of the Capacity Building Commission and Quality Council of India, discussed efforts to strengthen the digital health ecosystem by creating more use cases, such as QR Code-based OPD registrations, and working on regulatory frameworks that will act as a pull factor for ABDM adoption. Ms. Yegnapriya Bharath, Chief General Manager, IRDAI, elaborated on the crucial role ABDM’s HCX can play by highlighting how speedier processing of health insurance claims as a benefit would assist entice companies in the insurance sector to adopt the plan.

Representatives of ABDM-enabled institutions from the commercial sector, including SRL Labs, Apollo Hospitals, and Narayana Hrudayalaya, offered their perspectives on the difficulties they are having implementing the programme activities as well as the solutions they have come up with. The technology provider side was represented by CrelioHealth, Plus91, and Practo, who shared their perspectives on how teleconsultation, ABDM-enabled HMIS, LIMS, and other digital health solutions may help onboard more healthcare practitioners and advance the digitalisation of patient health information.

A special session with doctors, who are an important stakeholder group in the programme, was conducted by Dr. Basant Garg, Additional CEO, NHA. Private integrators such as Sahamati, Driefcase, IHX, Ekacare, Paytm, and Sattva representatives also expressed their opinions and creative ideas on boosting the adoption of ABDM.

The event was concluded by Dr. R. S. Sharma, CEO of NHA, who said: “The ABDM is a complicated system with a wide range of stakeholders and many technical layers. The major problem is getting everyone together and setting up a working environment. However, for the system to be adopted, reciprocity between stakeholders is crucial. Through this workshop, we were able to gather the viewpoints of the stakeholders, and we plan to perform more sessions of group brainstorming in the future. In preparation for the implementation of ABDM in mission mode, it has been a wonderful learning experience.”
