India Strengthens R&D Push With ₹1 Lakh Crore Innovation Fund
India is strengthening its research and innovation ecosystem with the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme, aimed at increasing private-sector participation in research and supporting high-risk, high-impact technologies.
The scheme is designed to help India move beyond technology adoption and strengthen its capabilities in developing and commercialising homegrown technologies. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is the nodal ministry, while the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) oversees the implementation framework.

Focus on AI, Deep Tech and Strategic Technologies
The RDI Scheme focuses on strategic and emerging areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, biotechnology, space technology, robotics and advanced materials.
The initiative aims to provide long-term funding for projects involving significant research risks and longer development cycles, encouraging companies and startups to invest in innovative technologies.
Boost for Deep-Tech Startups
A key focus is supporting deep-tech startups that often require patient capital to move from research and development to commercialisation. The framework is expected to strengthen collaboration between startups, industry and research institutions.
The initiative could also help scientific discoveries move more efficiently from laboratories to market-ready products and technologies.

Strengthening India’s Technology Ecosystem
The RDI initiative comes as India seeks to strengthen domestic capabilities in critical technologies and reduce dependence on imported solutions. Greater investment in AI, semiconductors, biotechnology and quantum technologies could strengthen India’s position in global technology value chains.
The government also aims to increase collaboration between private companies, startups, research institutions and funding organisations to accelerate technology development and commercialisation.
As implementation expands, the ₹1 lakh crore RDI corpus is expected to support India’s ambitions in AI, deep tech, semiconductors, biotechnology and other strategic sectors, while building a stronger private-sector-led research and innovation ecosystem.
