British scientists have developed a new artificial artery that functions the same way as a real blood vessel.

University College London’s Professor Alexander Seifalian headed the research and used nanotechnology and polymer materials to develop the tiny bypass graft. The artery carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body and has a coating of millions of tiny spikes, each of which is thousands of times smaller than a human hair. University College London researchers claim the artery can reduce the chances of a heart attack during bypass surgery.

The Wellcome Trust has granted $800,000 to the research team for human trials, which are expected to begin this year.
