Heavyweight patients not just jeopardizes their personal operating risk, but also affects the efficacy of surgical procedures on traditional operating tables. More and more, surgeons are faced with such additional concerns as the number of overweight patients continues to rise.

 

Very heavy patients generally impair the stability of an operating table, making it virtually impossible to position it as the surgeon requires. “Patients are becoming heavier, these are enormous leverage effects” adds Dr. Dieter Engel, technical director at MAQUET. “Nevertheless, the operating table has to be positioned to the millimeter.”
