Broadband technology will now help Victorian mobile breast screening services. It will slash costs, waiting time, anxiety and potentially it will save lives. At Wangaratta, Australia, the state’s Information and Communication Technology Minister, Marsha Thomson, declared it to be world’s first mobile breast screening service. The $1.9 million technology pilot will send digital mammograms to Melbourne for assessment each day. It will allow for online diagnosis of abnormalities in a follow-up screening. In the past, follow-ups required women to travel to Melbourne. The new technology will be piloted for three years in various locations around Victoria, such as Corryong, Yarrawonga, Myrtleford, Tallangatta and Wangaratta. This service is free for women over 40, but is targetted primarily at those between the ages of 50 and 69. It will be screening up to 42 women a day and the van will be at Wangaratta until December.
