Dr M. Srinivas Niti Aayog

The Government of India has appointed Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, as a Member of NITI Aayog, succeeding Dr. V. K. Paul, marking a key transition in the country’s health policy leadership.

The appointment signals a strategic shift, bringing hands-on clinical governance and hospital administration expertise into India’s apex public policy institution. Dr. Srinivas, who has been leading AIIMS New Delhi since September 2022, is widely recognised for his administrative leadership and experience in managing one of the country’s most complex healthcare institutions. Prior to this role, he served as Dean at ESIC Hospital and Medical College, Hyderabad.

According to an official statement issued by AIIMS New Delhi, the move is being viewed as a milestone for the healthcare sector, reflecting the growing importance of practitioner-led insights in national policymaking. Institutional stakeholders have highlighted that his transition could strengthen the alignment between healthcare delivery systems and policy frameworks.

Broader Restructuring at NITI Aayog

The latest appointments are part of a broader reconstitution of the NITI Aayog leadership. Veteran economist Dr. Ashok Lahiri has been named Vice Chairperson, bringing over four decades of experience across institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and the Asian Development Bank.

In addition, noted immunologist and molecular scientist Dr. Gobardhan Das has been appointed as a Member. His expertise in infectious diseases, immunology, and cell biology is expected to add scientific depth to the think tank’s policy direction, particularly in areas such as public health preparedness and biomedical research.

For the healthcare ecosystem, Dr. Srinivas’s induction into NITI Aayog is likely to have multi-dimensional implications. His background in tertiary care delivery and institutional administration may influence policy focus areas such as:

  • Strengthening public hospital infrastructure
  • Enhancing healthcare workforce management
  • Driving integration of clinical insights into digital health frameworks
  • Advancing reforms in medical education and research

This development comes at a time when India is recalibrating its healthcare priorities, with increased emphasis on resilience, innovation, and self-reliance.

Transition at AIIMS New Delhi

With Dr. Srinivas expected to move into his new role, AIIMS New Delhi will undergo a leadership transition. The institute is likely to be overseen by an acting director in the interim, while the search for a permanent successor progresses.

Among the names being discussed is Dr. Nikhil Tandon, currently Professor and Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS. His candidature reflects the depth of leadership talent within India’s premier medical institutions.

Sector Outlook

Industry observers view this leadership reshuffle as a move towards more integrated policymaking, where clinical, economic, and scientific expertise converge. For healthcare providers, pharma companies, medtech firms, and digital health stakeholders, the reconstituted NITI Aayog leadership could shape upcoming reforms across care delivery, innovation ecosystems, and regulatory frameworks.

As India continues to strengthen its position as a global healthcare leader, such cross-domain leadership transitions are expected to play a pivotal role in defining the next phase of sectoral growth.
