In a landmark announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has revealed plans to extend India’s affordable pharmaceutical initiative, Jan Aushadhi Kendra, to Guyana. The initiative aims to improve access to high-quality, affordable generic medicines in the South American nation, marking a significant step in India’s global healthcare outreach.
The announcement came during PM Modi’s visit to Guyana, where he held bilateral talks with Guyana’s President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, in Georgetown. This visit holds historical significance as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years.

Speaking at a joint press conference, PM Modi emphasized the importance of India-Guyana ties, stating:
“India is a key supplier of pharmaceutical products to Guyana. We are committed to enhancing this collaboration by increasing pharma exports and setting up a Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Guyana.”

The initiative is expected to be operational in the coming months, offering a reliable source of affordable medicines to the people of Guyana.
Jan Aushadhi Kendras: Transforming Access to Medicines
Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) are part of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a government initiative to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices. These centers aim to make healthcare more accessible, particularly for economically disadvantaged populations.
India currently operates over 12,600 JAKs nationwide, with states such as Uttar Pradesh (2,210), Kerala (1,228), Karnataka (1,225), and Tamil Nadu (1,107) leading in the number of operational centers. These Kendras have proven to be a game-changer in bridging the gap between healthcare affordability and availability.
Expanding Healthcare Diplomacy
PM Modi’s visit to Guyana is part of a broader diplomatic tour that includes Nigeria and Brazil. During his time in Georgetown, both nations signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral ties in areas such as healthcare, trade, and cultural exchanges.
The decision to establish a Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Guyana is expected to deepen the India-Guyana partnership while showcasing India’s commitment to addressing global healthcare challenges.

A Step Towards Global Healthcare Equity
By bringing the Jan Aushadhi initiative to Guyana, India is not only reinforcing its position as a global pharmaceutical leader but also promoting healthcare equity on an international scale. The initiative aligns with India’s vision of ensuring affordable healthcare for all and demonstrates how collaborative efforts can bridge healthcare gaps across borders.
This development sets the stage for enhanced collaboration in the healthcare sector, paving the way for future innovations and partnerships between the two nations.
