Google has strengthened its commitment to India’s digital healthcare ecosystem by expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives through a deeper collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and a series of new public health programmes. The latest initiatives aim to accelerate AI-driven healthcare innovation, improve disease detection, enhance clinical decision-making, and support the country’s growing digital public health infrastructure.
As part of the expanded partnership, AIIMS researchers are leveraging Google’s open-source MedGemma multimodal AI models to develop India-specific healthcare solutions. Building on earlier work in dermatology and outpatient triage, the collaboration is now focused on creating AI models for leprosy and sexual and reproductive health, addressing critical public health challenges through advanced, locally relevant AI applications.
Google also announced broader public health initiatives designed to strengthen India’s digital health ecosystem. These include expanding access to open-source AI technologies that can support healthcare professionals, researchers, and public health institutions in developing scalable digital health solutions. The company said its latest efforts are intended to make AI tools more accessible while fostering innovation across healthcare, education, language technologies, and enterprise applications.

The announcement reflects Google’s continued investment in India’s AI ecosystem, where collaborations with academic institutions, healthcare providers, and government agencies are playing an increasingly important role in advancing technology-enabled healthcare. Experts believe AI has the potential to improve early diagnosis, optimise clinical workflows, strengthen disease surveillance, and expand access to quality healthcare, particularly in underserved regions.
The expanded AIIMS partnership underscores the growing convergence of healthcare and artificial intelligence in India. As the country continues to invest in digital health infrastructure and AI research, collaborations between technology companies and leading medical institutions are expected to accelerate the development of innovative, patient-centric healthcare solutions while supporting the broader vision of a digitally empowered and more accessible healthcare system.
