Health Ministry Launches Disease Surveillance Programme to Strengthen Bio-Emergency Response

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) to strengthen India’s preparedness and response framework for bio-emergencies, including disease outbreaks and public health threats.

The programme is designed to enable early detection and real-time monitoring, supporting faster decision-making and coordinated response across national and state health systems. It aims to enhance operational efficiency in managing biological risks through structured surveillance and reporting mechanisms.

To streamline execution, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been developed for managing bio-emergencies, ensuring uniformity in response protocols across healthcare institutions and agencies.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued comprehensive guidelines on biological disasters, including bio-warfare and bio-terrorism, outlining risk identification, epidemiological indicators, and response strategies.

As part of capacity building, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units have been trained to handle bio-emergency situations, strengthening on-ground response capabilities.

The initiative focuses on building a coordinated, system-driven public health response framework, improving surveillance infrastructure, institutional readiness, and inter-agency collaboration to manage biological threats at scale.
