The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the setting up of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Telemedicine Services at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, to improve the quality of online medical consultations on the eSanjeevani 2.0 platform.
Telemedicine has become an important way for patients in villages and small towns to access doctors without travelling to big hospitals. However, maintaining consistent consultation quality and proper medical records across large numbers of online visits has been a challenge. The new CoE is expected to help address these issues and make teleconsultation services more reliable.
The proposal was submitted by Dr Sheetal Verma, Nodal In-Charge for telemedicine at KGMU. The project will be supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, with Jhpiego assisting in implementation. The centre will focus on training doctors, setting standard treatment guidelines and regularly reviewing the quality of online consultations.

Mentors and Group Practice Managers will monitor consultations to improve diagnosis and decision-making, while more specialist services are expected to be added over time.
KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand said the move would help ensure fair and dependable access to healthcare. The Centre of Excellence is expected to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s digital health system and support the long-term growth of public telemedicine services.
