Jharkhand is preparing to expand treatment services for 21 critical diseases across select government and empanelled private hospitals, a move that could ease the long-standing burden on patients who have had to travel outside the state for specialised care.

Major institutions such as Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, Sadar Hospital Ranchi, Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad, and MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur are being upgraded to offer these services. Private hospitals that meet the required criteria will also be included, widening the network of facilities capable of handling complex cases.

The expanded treatment range covers cancer care, organ and bone marrow transplants, liver and neurological conditions, eye-related procedures, and reconstructive surgeries. These are areas where access has been limited within the state, often forcing patients to seek care elsewhere.

All treatments will be offered under the Mukhyamantri Abua Swasthya Suraksha Yojana through defined packages, a structure aimed at simplifying payments for hospitals while reducing costs for patients.

The state is also planning to work with Christian Medical College, Vellore, particularly to strengthen bone marrow transplantation services, bringing specialised expertise closer to patients in Jharkhand.

Taken together, the initiative reflects a focused effort to improve the availability of advanced healthcare within the state and reduce dependence on facilities outside Jharkhand.
