The World Health Organisation has thrown light on the alarming slowing rate of global progress in dealing with deaths from noncommunicable diseases and mental health, urging government and businesses to accelerate investment in cost effective interventions targeting the said NCDs (Non Communicable Diseases) and mental health issues.
According to the newly published report by WHO titled “Saving Lives Spending Less” , by adapting proven, low cost measures at an estimate of US $3 per person annually countries could generate up to US $1 trillion in economic returns by 2030.
NCDs and mental health conditions report nearly 32 million deaths per year with low and middle income countries bearing the 75% of the global burden. Naturally it results in lost productivity, rising healthcare costs and shrinking workplace participation which impacts GDP growth across regions. To tackle this, WHO states that interventions such as higher taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks; wider access to affordable medicines and expansion of primary healthcare would offer both public health impact and fiscal benefits.
Industry and Policymakers also stand to benefit from scaling up WHO’s ‘Best Buys’ implementations.
- Healthcare providers and pharma companies would stand to benefit from increased demand for early deduction, treatment and preventive care solutions.
- Though FMCG and beverage industries may face tighter regulatory and tax environments they could pivot towards healthier product portfolios.
- Insurers and employers have an opportunity to lower long term costs supporting workforce mental health and wellness programmes.
- Governments can view these reforms not only as public health measures but as investments in economic productivity and sustainable growth.
WHO expects the Fourth UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health on 25 September 2025 in New York to drive robust global commitments and create new frameworks for collaboration with the governments, development banks and private sector players.
