The growing awareness surrounding heart disease has led to a significant rise in preventive cardiac screenings, particularly among individuals aged 30-65 years. Mahajan Imaging & Labs has reported a remarkable 20-30% increase in cardiac investigations across its 10 centers in the past year. This uptick underscores a shift in public attitudes toward health, with more individuals opting for early detection to manage heart health risks.

Health experts attribute this surge to several factors, including the rising prevalence of sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and increasing stress levels, which have contributed to higher instances of cardiac events in younger populations. The widespread media coverage of sudden cardiac arrests and heart-related fatalities has heightened public concern, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures.

Kabir Mahajan, COO of Mahajan Imaging & Labs, highlighted the positive trend, stating, “We’re seeing a notable increase in health-consciousness, especially among young adults. Preventive screenings, such as ECG, ECHO, TMT, and lipid profile tests, are becoming more popular as people prioritize proactive care over reactive treatment. In 2024, we saw a 20% increase in cardiac tests compared to 2023, with TMT tests showing the highest growth at 30%. ECG and CT Coronary tests rose by 25%, and ECHO tests by 14%, demonstrating a clear commitment to heart health.”

Mahajan also pointed out the evolving understanding of women’s cardiac health, particularly in the context of premenopausal women. “For years, estrogen was thought to offer protection against heart disease, often leading to misdiagnoses of chest pain in young women. However, new evidence reveals that this protection is not absolute, especially in those with risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, or obesity. As a result, more women are opting for cardiac screenings, leading to early detection of heart disease,” he said.

Dr. Punit Sethi, Director of CT at Mahajan Imaging & Labs, reinforced the growing concern of heart disease in younger demographics. “Heart disease is no longer just an issue for older populations. In India, individuals are two to three times more likely to develop heart disease compared to their Western counterparts, with genetics playing a significant role. Early screenings are crucial, particularly for those with a family history of heart disease or diabetes. Ideally, screenings should begin by age 25 for those with family histories and by 30 for others. These screenings are more affordable and accessible than ever, allowing individuals to manage risk factors like high blood pressure and arterial damage.”

The rise of health monitoring apps and wearable devices has further accelerated this trend, allowing individuals to track vital parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure. Early screenings help identify conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, and arrhythmias, empowering individuals to take timely action and prevent severe cardiac events.

Healthcare providers are also expanding their offerings by introducing specialized screening packages for younger populations, ensuring that preventive care remains both accessible and affordable.

With heart disease becoming an increasing concern across all age groups, experts emphasize the importance of adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and effective stress management are crucial for long-term heart health. Early screening and timely action can make a significant difference in preventing life-threatening heart conditions.

Mahajan’s final remark underscores the shift in public mindset: “Preventive cardiac screenings are no longer an option but a necessity for safeguarding heart health in today’s world.”
