Piyush Singla, a 2012-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as Director in the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), according to an official government order.
Singla has been selected for the post under the Central Staffing Scheme following his recommendation for Central deputation by the Ministry of Home Affairs. His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge and will remain co-terminus with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, with the possibility of extension as per Central Staffing Scheme norms or until further orders.
Prior to this appointment, Singla served in key administrative roles in Jammu & Kashmir, including in the Information Technology Department. Reports also indicate that he has academic training in medicine and public health, bringing a blend of governance and healthcare understanding to his new assignment.
His appointment comes at a crucial juncture for India’s digital healthcare transformation. The National Health Authority, which implements flagship health initiatives including Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), is also leading the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aimed at creating an integrated digital health ecosystem across the country.
ABDM seeks to build interoperable digital health infrastructure by connecting patients, hospitals, healthcare professionals and service providers through secure digital platforms and health records. Central to this framework is the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), a unique digital health identifier designed to enable seamless access and portability of medical records.
The scale of the mission has expanded rapidly over the past few years. Government data shows that more than 73 crore ABHA IDs had been created nationwide as of February 2025, highlighting increasing adoption of digital health services and records across India.
