Boehringer Ingelheim India, EMRI Green Health Services

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in India, affecting nearly two million people annually. Despite medical advancements, timely intervention within the critical “golden period” of 4.5 hours is often missed due to delays in diagnosis and emergency response. Recognizing this challenge, Boehringer Ingelheim India has entered into a strategic partnership with EMRI Green Health Services, a GVK enterprise that operates the Government-funded 108 National Emergency Ambulance Service, to enhance pre-hospital stroke care across the country.

A Game-Changing Collaboration

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Boehringer Ingelheim India and Hyderabad-based EMRI Green Health Services marks a significant step toward improving stroke management in India. The initiative aims to standardize emergency response protocols, accelerate diagnosis, and provide specialized training to emergency medical teams.

Under this agreement, Boehringer Ingelheim India will leverage its globally recognized Angels Initiative to provide expert training for EMRI Green Health trainers and call center personnel. The program includes a Train-the-Trainer module, hosted at EMRI’s Hyderabad campus, offering access to learning resources, certifications, and structured protocols to refine ambulance services for stroke patients.

Impact on India’s Healthcare System

India’s healthcare system faces multiple challenges in managing stroke cases, including limited awareness, inadequate pre-hospital care, and fragmented emergency response networks. This collaboration aims to address these gaps by:

  • Training over 9,000 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs): Ensuring that ambulance teams across 14 states and Union Territories are equipped to recognize stroke symptoms and provide appropriate pre-hospital care.
  • Implementing a Pre-Notification System: Allowing EMTs to alert hospitals in advance, ensuring preparedness for timely treatment upon patient arrival.
  • Standardizing Stroke Protocols: Promoting uniform guidelines for stroke assessment and management to improve outcomes.
  • Strengthening Call Center Support: Enhancing emergency response through better coordination and real-time decision-making assistance.

Leaders’ Perspectives on the Initiative

Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Shraddha Bhure, Medical Director of Boehringer Ingelheim India, emphasized the importance of timely intervention: “This partnership underscores our commitment to improving access to timely stroke care. By equipping emergency medical teams with advanced tools and training, we aim to save lives and enhance patient outcomes, ensuring every stroke patient gets the care they need when it matters the most.”

Krishnam Raju, Director of EMRI Green Health Services, highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative: “Stroke affects nearly two million people annually in India. Through this MoU, we are empowering our teams with the expertise and resources necessary to make a life-saving impact nationwide.”

Dr. Jeyaraj Durai Pandian, President of the World Stroke Organization, lauded the effort, stating: “This collaboration will transform pre-hospital stroke care in India, bridging critical gaps to ensure timely intervention. Training ambulance teams across 14 states and implementing a pre-notification system marks a significant step in addressing the stroke burden and improving patient outcomes.”

A Critical Step Toward Advanced Stroke Care

The partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim India and EMRI Green Health Services is a crucial milestone in India’s fight against stroke-related mortality and disability. By integrating structured training, advanced emergency protocols, and better coordination between ambulances and hospitals, the initiative has the potential to revolutionize stroke care across the nation.

As India continues its journey toward healthcare modernization, such collaborations play a vital role in bridging gaps and ensuring life-saving interventions reach patients in time. The initiative is not just a step forward in stroke management but also a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in transforming India’s healthcare landscape.
