HMPV

The Ministery of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India while assuring the public that the virus is not new to the country and poses no unusual threat. The ministry stated that HMPV has been in circulation globally, including in India, since its identification in 2001.

Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda addressed the public in a video statement, emphasizing the robust surveillance systems in place and urging calm. He stated, “Health experts have clarified that the HMPV is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating worldwide for many years. HMPV spreads through the air, affecting individuals of all age groups. The health systems and surveillance networks of the country are vigilant, and there is no reason to worry.”

HMPV in India: Cases and Surveillance

India has detected five cases of HMPV as part of its ongoing surveillance for respiratory illnesses. Two cases have been reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka; one in Ahmedabad, Gujarat; and two suspected cases in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Shashikant Shambharkar, Deputy Director of Health in Nagpur, confirmed the two suspected cases, stating, “Two suspected HMPV patients have been found in Nagpur. One of these patients is 7 years old, and the other is 13 years old. The reports of both these patients, initially tested positive at a private hospital, are being sent to AIIMS Nagpur for further examination. Both patients have been treated and discharged.”

Government’s Vigilance and Preparedness

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are monitoring the situation, ensuring that there is no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases. The Ministry also confirmed that data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) corroborates this assessment.

Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda further reassured, “The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken cognizance of the situation and will share its report with us shortly. A joint monitoring group meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Director General for Health Services on January 4 to review the situation. Our health systems and surveillance networks remain vigilant, ensuring the country is prepared to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges.”
