TB elimination campaign

In a landmark move to combat tuberculosis (TB) in India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is set to unveil a 100-day intensified TB elimination campaign. The initiative, aimed at addressing the challenges of TB incidence and mortality, will be launched by Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda in Panchkula, Haryana, on December 7, 2024. The event will also see the participation of Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini and Health Minister Smt. Arti Singh Rao, along with other government officials and civil society representatives.

Key Focus Areas and Objectives

The campaign is designed to enhance TB case detection, reduce diagnostic delays, and improve treatment outcomes, with a special focus on high-risk groups. Covering 347 districts across 33 states and union territories, this initiative aligns with the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It marks a significant step in achieving the vision of a TB-free India (TB-Mukt Bharat), a goal emphasized by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during the 2018 Delhi End TB Summit.

Key objectives of the campaign include:

  • Boosting diagnostic coverage and addressing disparities in TB outcomes.
  • Enhancing programme performance on critical indicators such as TB incidence, diagnostic accuracy, and mortality reduction.
  • Strengthening support systems for TB patients through financial and nutritional aid.

Strategic Measures and Enhanced Support

The initiative will prioritize advanced diagnostics, targeted screenings for vulnerable populations, and specialized care for high-risk groups. It also incorporates expanded nutritional support under the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana and social support for household contacts as part of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. Leveraging the extensive network of Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs, the campaign aims to extend TB services to the grassroots level, ensuring comprehensive care for those in need.

Commitment to a TB-Free India

This intensified effort reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to reducing the burden of TB and achieving the target of TB elimination by 2025. With a focus on integrating prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services, the campaign represents a strategic push to strengthen India’s public health framework and foster healthier communities.

Further updates on the campaign will be shared as implementation progresses, underscoring the nation’s dedication to improving health outcomes and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all.
