AYUSH Systems

The Ministry of AYUSH continues to drive the development and promotion of AYUSH systems of medicine across the nation through the National AYUSH Mission (NAM). Implemented in collaboration with State and Union Territory (UT) governments, NAM provides critical financial support for various initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery and accessibility.

Under NAM, significant strides have been made, including:

  • Upgrading AYUSH Infrastructure: Existing AYUSH hospitals, dispensaries, and sub-health centers have been modernized to improve healthcare services.
  • Integrated Healthcare Facilities: Co-locating AYUSH facilities within Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Community Health Centers (CHCs), and District Hospitals (DHs) has bridged gaps in holistic healthcare.
  • Essential Medicine Supply: Government AYUSH hospitals, dispensaries, and teaching institutions have been regularly stocked with essential medicines.
  • Establishing AYUSH Educational Institutions: States with limited AYUSH teaching infrastructure have benefitted from new institutions, as well as upgrades to undergraduate and postgraduate centers.
  • Innovative Programs: Initiatives such as AYUSH Health and Wellness Centers, AYUSH Grams, and Yoga Wellness Centers continue to enhance community-level health outcomes.

Between 2019-2024, ₹2,76,529.87 lakh was allocated under NAM, supporting:

  • 167 Integrated AYUSH hospitals.
  • 12,405 AYUSH dispensaries and 996 AYUSH hospitals with essential medicines annually.
  • 3,883 Yoga Wellness Centers and 1,055 AYUSH Grams.

Additionally, the Ministry operates two Central Sector Schemes—AYURGYAN Scheme and AYURSWATHYA Yojana—which provide direct financial assistance to eligible institutions based on merit. These schemes emphasize grassroots initiatives, bypassing state-wise allocations to empower organizations nationwide, including those in West Bengal.

Key NAM-supported projects include 12,500 AYUSH Health & Wellness Centers and substantial co-location efforts at 2,322 PHCs, 715 CHCs, and 314 DHs. These initiatives signify a pivotal shift toward integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare systems, reflecting the government’s dedication to strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure.
