Dengue

India is currently grappling with a sharp increase in vector-borne diseases like Dengue and Chikungunya, severely impacting healthcare facilities in cities such as Lucknow and Pune. The strain has led to the cancellation of critical health camps and overwhelmed hospitals, with a critical shortage of beds and medical staff hindering essential healthcare services.

Pune: The community health camps scheduled for the last week of September have been canceled, as private charitable hospitals and medical colleges reach full capacity. These camps, intended to provide essential care in underserved areas, were disrupted due to the ongoing crisis. Earlier, the Maharashtra government had directed these institutions to conduct free health camps in rural and slum areas based on their bed capacity, with larger hospitals expected to conduct up to 40 camps. Despite more than 100 camps being organized this year under schemes like the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), the growing number of patients has led to further cancellations.

Lucknow: The situation is becoming critical as the city reported 31 new Dengue cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 460 since January. The city also recorded its first official Dengue death last week when 18-year-old Shreyansh Srivastava succumbed to the virus. The majority of cases have surfaced during August and September, with hotspots identified in areas such as Gosaiganj, Alambagh, Indiranagar, and Gomtinagar Extension. Local health authorities are working to control the spread by targeting mosquito breeding sites.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the global risk of Dengue, estimating that up to 400 million infections occur annually. As healthcare facilities in cities like Lucknow and Pune buckle under the pressure, the outbreaks underscore the urgent need for enhanced resources, public awareness, and effective mosquito control measures to mitigate the growing health crisis.
