Kerala intensifies health monitoring efforts as authorities track both Mpox and Nipah virus cases.
A suspected case of Mpox has been reported in Malappuram district, Kerala, after a man returning from abroad exhibited symptoms consistent with the disease. Initially admitted to a private hospital, the patient was later transferred to Manjeri Medical College, where doctors suspected monkeypox. His samples have been sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing, and the results are currently awaited.
According to a district health official, the man’s condition raised concerns during his initial examination, prompting further testing for Mpox. “We have sent the patient’s samples to Kozhikode Medical College for confirmation, and we are closely monitoring the situation,” the official stated.
This development follows a confirmed case of Mpox in Delhi, where a 26-year-old man from Haryana’s Hisar tested positive for the virus. The Union Health Ministry emphasized that the Delhi case is isolated and not linked to the broader global outbreak, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
Kerala’s Vigilance on Public Health Threats
The state of Kerala has been on high alert, not only due to the recent Mpox concerns but also because of a Nipah virus outbreak in Malappuram. The district recently established containment zones after a 24-year-old succumbed to Nipah virus infection on September 9. Local health authorities are ramping up surveillance and precautionary measures to prevent further spread of both viruses.
Monkeypox, spread through prolonged close contact, typically presents with symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Most cases are self-limiting, with the illness resolving within two to four weeks. The WHO declared the global Mpox outbreak a PHEIC due to its continued transmission across regions, particularly in parts of Africa.

Strengthening Healthcare Monitoring in Kerala
As the state continues to manage both Mpox and Nipah virus threats, Kerala’s public health authorities are focused on rigorous testing, containment, and treatment protocols. The recent surge in suspected and confirmed cases underscores the need for heightened vigilance and collaborative efforts across healthcare facilities.
With test results for the suspected Mpox case in Malappuram expected soon, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring public health measures are in place to protect residents and manage any potential outbreaks effectively.
