To revolutionize medical education and healthcare delivery in India, the National Health Authority (NHA) has partnered with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) to integrate Digital Health education into the medical curriculum. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place in the presence of Union Health Minister, Shri J P Nadda.
Under this collaboration, MUHS will offer its Digital Health Foundation Course (DHFC) to the NHA and collaborate on the development of additional digital health programs. These programs will play a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). The initiative aims to build a more connected and efficient healthcare ecosystem, ultimately enhancing the skills of medical students, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
Shri J P Nadda emphasized the significance of this partnership, noting that it marks a critical step towards embedding digital health education into medical curricula. “This collaboration is a milestone in our journey towards creating a connected and efficient healthcare ecosystem. By equipping our healthcare professionals with the necessary digital skills, we are not only enhancing their capabilities but also ensuring better access to quality care for millions of Indians,” said Nadda.
The MoU envisions the creation of additional courses in the future to further bolster the digital health landscape in the country. Shri Nadda also highlighted the importance of continuous capacity-building for healthcare workers to effectively implement initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). “This MoU will pave the way for capacity-building and contribute significantly to the digital teaching landscape across the country,” he added.
Smt. Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, CEO of the National Health Authority, underscored the transformative impact of digital health education. “Digital Health is an evolving field, and there is a pressing need to build awareness among all stakeholders in the health ecosystem. Our partnership with MUHS will accelerate the adoption of digital health solutions, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are well-prepared to leverage these technologies for improved patient outcomes and efficient healthcare delivery,” she stated.
Lt Gen Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd), Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, expressed her pride in Maharashtra being the first state to introduce Digital Health education for all medical students. “Understanding Digital Health is imperative in today’s healthcare environment. MUHS is proud to support NHA in the national roll-out of this crucial initiative,” she remarked.
The Digital Health Foundation Course (DHFC) created by MUHS, with support from the Koita Foundation, provides a comprehensive understanding of digital health fundamentals for doctors and healthcare providers. The curriculum, curated by leading experts, will be customized for stakeholders in the public health ecosystem and will be available through various platforms, including Mission Karmayogi’s iGOT platform.
The DHFC is set to play a key role in equipping healthcare professionals with the skills needed for the digital transformation of India’s healthcare sector, ensuring effective implementation of the ABDM in their respective areas.
The event was attended by Shri Apurva Chandra, Union Health Secretary, senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, and Shri Rizwan Koita, Director of the Koita Foundation and Chairman of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), among other dignitaries.
