CBM India Trust

In a significant stride towards inclusive healthcare, CBM India Trust, in partnership with the esteemed Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (AIIMS) and the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), has inaugurated a cutting-edge Low-Vision Center at the Government Medical College in Amritsar. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards providing specialized eye care services for individuals with visual impairments.

Under the visionary Roshini program initiated by CBM India Trust, the Low-Vision Center is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and manned by proficient professionals dedicated to serving individuals with low vision. The center offers a comprehensive array of services including assessments, advanced screenings, and personalized consultations aimed at addressing the unique needs of each patient.

One of the distinguishing features of the center is its provision of low-vision kits, which include essential tools and devices such as spectacles, magnifiers, talking watches, and foldable canes. These aids are instrumental in enhancing the visual performance of patients, thereby improving their quality of life.

In addition to its core services, the Low-Vision Center is committed to conducting outreach camps in schools for the blind, facilitating eye screenings, and providing access to assistive technology. Moreover, the center extends support to individuals with visual impairments in obtaining disability certifications, thus enabling them to avail themselves of government programs and benefits seamlessly.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative, Mr. Sony Thomas, Executive Director of CBM India Trust, emphasized the organization’s dedication to ensuring equitable access to specialized eye care services. He underscored the collaborative efforts aimed at empowering individuals with low vision and reaffirmed the commitment to making quality eye care accessible to all.

Prof. (Dr.) Praveen Vashist, Professor and Officer In-Charge of Community Ophthalmology at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, commended the partnership with CBM India Trust in establishing the Low-Vision Center. He highlighted the center’s role in augmenting existing eye health services and reiterated AIIMS’s commitment to expanding access to specialized care for those in need.

The inauguration of the Low-Vision Center in Amritsar is part of a broader initiative that includes the recent launch of similar centers in Jodhpur and Bhubaneswar, with another set to be inaugurated in Patna. Through the Roshini program, over 31,000 individuals, including persons with disabilities and marginalized communities, have already benefited from essential eye care services provided by CBM India Trust and its partners.

Aligned with the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB-VI), the Roshini program strives to ensure universal access to high-quality, affordable eye care services, thereby contributing to the overarching goal of healthcare inclusivity.

This collaborative endeavor stands as a beacon of hope for individuals with low vision, promising a future where everyone, regardless of their visual abilities, can lead a life of dignity and empowerment.
