Sickle Cell Disease

The Health Ministry of India has achieved a significant landmark in its fight against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, the ministry has successfully screened over 10 million people. This mission, initiated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 1st July 2023 in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, aims to examine approximately 70 million individuals over three years.

Sickle Cell Disease is a hereditary blood disorder, impacts patients throughout their lives. It predominantly affects the tribal communities within India, although it also occurs in non-tribal groups. The mission’s focus extends to 278 districts across 17 Indian states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, which show a higher prevalence of this condition.

The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission not only involves widespread screening but also concentrates on the prevention and management of sickle cell anemia, particularly in areas with high tribal populations and other regions showing a higher incidence of the disease. This mission-mode approach signifies a proactive step in addressing and managing a major genetic health issue in India.
