Global Food Regulators Summit 2023

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the maiden Global Food Regulators Summit 2023 in the presence of distinguished guests, including Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Shri Narendra Tomar and Nepal’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Bedu Ram Bhusal. The summit, organised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), aimed to create a global platform for food regulators to enhance food safety systems and regulations across the food value chain.

In his address, Dr. Mandaviya emphasised the interconnection between safe food and good health, highlighting the role of balanced, safe, and nutritious food as preventive care for overall wellness. He stressed the significance of addressing food safety, food grains, and food security for sustainable global development, promoting an integrated “One Health” approach that considers the health of climate, humans, animals, and plants. This approach also formed a key priority for the Health Working Group under the ongoing G20 India Presidency.

The summit focused on the importance of international cooperation and solidarity, aligning with India’s G20 Presidency theme of “Vasudev Kutumbhakam: One Earth, One Nation.” Recognising regional diversities, Dr. Mandaviya encouraged exploring how they can be incorporated into global best practices for food safety protocols.

During the event, several initiatives were launched, including the Food-o-Copoeia, a comprehensive reference for food safety standards, and ‘SaNGRAH, (Safe food for Nations: Global food Regulatory Authorities Handbook), a database of Food Regulatory Authorities from 76 countries. The summit also featured a Common Digital Dashboard, providing comprehensive information on food standards, regulations, and latest developments by Food Regulators in India.

The two-day exhibition showcased food safety, standards, testing capabilities, and advancements in food technologies. Exhibitors from esteemed organisations and food business operators presented their expertise and contributions to the field, with a particular focus on promoting millets under the name ‘Shree Anna.’

The summit concluded with a strong call to collectively ensure access to safe and nutritious food for everyone, everywhere.
