The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed ceiling price of 30 more essential drugs, bringing about 760 medicines under price control in India.

“All manufacturers of scheduled formulations, selling the branded or generic or both the versions of scheduled formulations at a price higher than the ceiling price (plus local taxes as applicable) so fixed and notified by the government, shall revise the prices of all such formulations downward not exceeding the ceiling price specified… plus local taxes as applicable, if any,” the NPPA notification said.

The drug pricing regulator said while the ceiling price of 19 formulations of different essential drugs has been fixed, that of 11 has been revised. NPPA has also fixed the retail prices of seven formulations.

The notification brings under price control formulations including Morphine injection, Sodium Valproate, Coagulation Factor VIII powder for injection, Spironolactone tablet, Diclofenac capsule, Ibuprofen capsule, Clotrimazole lotion and Permethrin, among others.

The move comes in the wake of the governments drive to make affordable quality medicines available to patients across the country.
